This year's beginner's class will be held March 20, 2010 from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Registration begins at 9:00 AM. It is held at the 1st Congregational Church, 751 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont (where we routinely meet). Bring your own bag lunch.

About The Class

Beekeeping is an ancient art. It blends bee biology and local botany with customs and practices evolved over centuries. It is an easy and engaging hobby, even in a populated area like San Mateo County.

Spring is the best time to set up beehives. This class will provide basic information on how to get started. There is no charge to register for the class.

You'll learn about the equipment and techniques of beekeeping, with an emphasis on keeping bees in urban and suburban settings.

Topics include:

  • Honeybee biology and behavior
  • Equipment
  • Where to get bees and how to install them in a hive
  • Hive manipulations
  • Seasonal colony management
  • Honey production
  • Bee health and diseases
  • Bee associations and other sources of information
